The science department aims to engage and inspire students with thought provoking questions, practical demonstrations and group work in order for them to succeed as the scientists of the future.

From finding out how a light bulb works, to debating whether or not genetic cloning could be the future; students will develop a greater understanding on their quest to understand the world we live in.

From medical research to mechanical engineering; succeeding in science opens doors to a vast array of careers; allowing students to meet challenges and solve problems we may not even know exist.

We expect all students to make positive measurable progress in science in order to achieve their full potential. This means that they must have a “can do” mentality to face any scientific challenge that they are presented with.

The department understands that some areas of science can be challenging, and the science team will help students conquer these challenges by offering the opportunity to engage in extended learning activities. There will be the chance to join science clubs as well as take part in national competitions for young scientists.

Students will be expected to do science homework that extends their knowledge and understanding of the material studied in lessons, as well as giving them the opportunity to develop their skills of reporting what they have seen and done, analysing results and evaluating their techniques for improvements. They will also develop other vital transferrable skills such as the ability to write for different audiences, organise information and apply mathematical skills.

Some areas of science naturally flow out of the classroom and students will get the opportunity to visit a range of key venues including the Science Museum and the Natural History Museum to further advance their learning.

During your child’s time at Lea Manor the science department intend to:

  • Provide a balanced science curriculum where students’ self-esteem is valued and ownership is encouraged.
  • Allow opportunity for students to apply their knowledge and understanding to new situations and solve problems independently.
  • Enable students to develop skills in posing questions and hypothesising using scientific knowledge.
  • Support students in being able to plan, carry out and evaluate findings by investigation.
  • Enable students to develop their use of scientific language.
  • Ensure that students are able to read scientific text and able to use the information to develop their ideas.
  • Develop students’ ability to answer extended writing questions
