Careers Education, Information, Advice & Guidance
At Lea Manor we are dedicated to raising student’s aspirations and ensuring there are No shortcuts to success. We will do this by supporting our young people to achieve their potential. Our careers programme is set out to empower students to plan and manage their own futures. Career learning will prepare students for opportunities and helps young people to become Lifelong learners. Students get a sense of real-life experiences when exposed to meaningful encounters with employers and further and higher education providers. This enhances their employability skills and makes them more aware of opportunities when leaving Lea Manor High School.
Our CEIAG information sessions and PSHE lessons support students with completing application forms, interview techniques, CV writing, and Career planning. Particular support is given to students with SEND needs when selecting their next steps and we also support Year 11 students in their transition to further education or apprenticeships after finishing school.
Our careers programme enables our students to have access to the wider world, through work experience, university trips, college and sixth form vists and visitors as well as our business breakfast events.
Once our students have left Lea Manor to attend Post 16 providers, we monitored the progress of our students and the courses and providers they have attended. This allows us to monitor the vists and speakers we invite into school to ensure we are covering the providers that our students attend or will go on to study with. Our career programme is regularly mointored and updated in line with emerging events and with the cohorts of students within the school.

Year 7
- Students are supported to recognise skills and qualities through the 16x16 programme
- Students become aware of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) careers by being involved in activity days delivered through external providers such as EnergyQuest and STEM days at the University of Bedfordshire and Brunel University
- During National Careers Week students engage in careers learning through their Learning Family time and in the classroom within the wider curriculum
Year 8
- Students are supported to recognise skills and qualities through the 16x16 programme
- Students extend their knowledge and skills sets in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) careers by being involved in activity days delivered through external providers such as EnergyQuest and STEM days at the University of Bedfordshire and Brunel University
- During National Careers Week students engage in careers learning through their Learning Family time and in the classroom within the wider curriculum
Year 9
- Students are supported to recognise skills and qualities through the 16x16 programme
- Students extend their knowledge and skills sets in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) careers by being involved in activity days delivered through external providers such as EnergyQuest and STEM days at the University of Bedfordshire and Brunel University

- Options Day for students to engage with future careers each subject will offer.
Year 10
- Students attend aspiration visits to universities such as University of Bedfordshire and Brunel University
- Taster day at FE Colleges
- Students attend Employer visits related to subject areas
- Students follow up on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) careers by being further involved in activity days delivered through external providers such as Vauxhall
- 1 week work experience and exposure to the world of work to develop their skills and abilities
- BESP employer speed meeting event
- Mock interview workshops
- During National Careers Week students engage in careers learning through subjects in the wider curriculum
- Opportunity to visit the World Skills UK at the NEC in Birmingham.
- Offered 1:1 interview for any identified, targeted students (SEN, Pupil Premium, EAL).
Year 11
- Sixth Form Colleges/Schools, Further Education colleges, Apprenticeship providers attend assembly time during Autumn to present options available post 16.
- Careers Convention for students and parents to speak to experts within industries and post 16 providers and universities
- 16x16 programme
- Careers Education Information and guidance is given in applying for Post 16 opportunities
- Apprenticeships Fair
- Preparing students for NCS National Citizen Service
- Offered 1:1 interview for any identified, targeted students (SEN, Pupil Premium, EAL).
BESP Business Breakfast
The BESP Business Breakfasts provides Year 10 pupils with the opportunity to meet with employers from a variety of sectors and ask them questions about their careers. These events give pupils an insight into various careers, the routes into such careers, and what working life is like for different sectors. Our next Business Breakfast for this year will take place in March 2021. Labour Market Information (LMI)
The following links provide information about the workplace. Labour market information describes the condition of the labour market, past and present, as well as future projections. It makes clear where work opportunities are increasing or decreasing, what occupations exist, what you need to study to become a professional in that occupation, what is required to take up an occupation, how one can find a job, change job or progress in a career.

Parents/Carers
As a parent we know that choices available to your child will be very different from the ones you had when you were at school. However as a parent/carer your guidance can significantly influence decisions made by your child so it is therefore imperative that we have up to date information. Please help your child to look at their options and speak to them to ensure they become lifelong learners and that they also understand that there are No shortcuts to Success. We also look for parents to become actively involved in our schools Business Breakfasts with our year 10 students (please see further information under BESP)

16x16
All pupils currently in Year 10 participate in the 16x16 initiative from Luton Borough Council. The project involves pupils undertaking 16 activities to improve their employability skills. Luton Borough Council is funding this initiative via the Luton Investment Framework. For further information, go to www.luton.gov.uk/LIF
The project is in response to feedback from employers over recent years that young people are not prepared for the world of work; they lack skills such as communication, teamwork, self-management, problem solving and resilience, for example.
The majority of the work for this project will take place during school hours, but can also be achieved in any extra-curricular activities or clubs the pupils participate in. Please follow the links below to resources that pupils may find useful when completing their 16x16 evidence sheets.
