Knowledge in Health and Fitness

We aim to offer a broad and balanced curriculum, ensuring all pupils are productive and have a positive experience of Physical Education, which will contribute to their life choices in later life. We encourage pupils to celebrate their progress and be proud of their achievements while representing LMHS at competitions and events.

Pupils will develop their knowledge on what it means to live a healthy and active lifestyle to take this with them outside of school life. Pupils will learn the fundamental requirements for effective training, analyse the health and fitness components as well promoting a healthy lifestyle learning about the impact of diet, stress and sleep on the body.

Curriculum in Health and Fitness

KS4 pupils who pick PE as their option, will follow the NCFE Health and Fitness specification before completing an NEA and exam.

Pupils will learn about the following topics:

  • Structure and function of body systems
  • Effects of health and fitness activities on the body
  • Health and Fitness components of fitness
  • Principles of training
  • Testing and developing components of fitness
  • Impact of lifestyle and health and fitness
  • Applying health and fitness analysis and setting goals
  • The structure of a health and fitness training programme and how to prepare safely

Its core intent is to provide learners with a foundational understanding of the Health and Fitness sector, equipping them with both theoretical knowledge and practical skills.

The qualification aims to bridge the gap between academic learning and the real-world application of Health and Fitness principles. It is structured to be engaging for pupils who are motivated by hands-on experiences and content directly related to the Health and Fitness industry.

Teaching and Learning in Health and Fitness

Our Key Stage 4 PE theory lessons are designed to be dynamic and engaging, blending in-depth subject knowledge with practical application. Throughout each topic, pupils tackle a variety of tasks—working independently, in pairs, and as part of a group—to develop a well-rounded understanding of sport and physical activity. We firmly believe in learning by doing; theoretical concepts, such as the components of fitness, are brought to life through hands-on practical sessions, including fitness testing and analysis. To ensure knowledge is retained for the long term and to prepare pupils for their final examinations, every lesson incorporates retrieval practice. This is achieved through low-stakes quizzes in workbooks and on mini-whiteboards, which help to solidify key concepts and build pupil confidence.

Assessment in Health and Fitness Pupils are consistently assessed during their Health and Fitness lessons and feedback is given verbally, both collectively as a class, as well as individually in order to refine key skills. Pupils will also be asked to peer assess during their lessons to further develop their understanding. KS4 pupils will be assessed at the end of each unit with
topic tests to identify any gaps in their knowledge. This information will be used to plan for future lessons to ensure misconceptions are addressed. Pupils will complete an NEA in Year 11 alongside a written exam made up of 80 marks.
Learning Beyond the Classroom in Health and Fitness

Our aim is to produce lifelong learners who are equipped with the skills and qualities to enable them to confidently lead physically, socially and mentally healthy and active lifestyles after their time at Lea Manor High School. To aid this goal, we offer a variety of extracurricular clubs throughout the academic year that coincide with our LSSA fixtures. Lea
Manor High School also has numerous links with local clubs and schemes for a wide range of sports. Lea Manor High School encourages parents/carers to support their children in leading a healthy lifestyle by attending extra-curricular clubs and keeping active.

Pupils will attend trips to local gyms such as Pure Gym to develop their knowledge and understanding outside of the classroom.
